Controller

Location: Montréal , QC

THE COMPANY


Our client is a fast-growing real estate developer based in Montreal, is looking for an experienced Controller, CPA, to support its growth.

THE CANDIDATE

The successful candidate will be expected to work at strategic and operational levels, while maintaining a hands-on approach to day-to-day accounting and financial activities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage all financial and accounting activities of the company and its subsidiaries
  • Prepare annual budgets and long-term financial planning
  • Prepare monthly reports such as income statements, balance sheets, changes in financial position, cash flow, etc.
  • Analyze and present variances from annual budgets
  • Verify operational transactions and reconcile general ledger accounts
  • Ensure submission and issuance of tax reports
  • Keep account registers up to date
  • Manage all relevant information relating to real estate project planning, trusts, taxation, insurance, investment activities
  • Work closely with the company's external accounting firm and international partners on local and international projects
  • Prepare and update accounting documents to record complex commercial and tax transactions in collaboration with the external accounting firm
  • Register leases in the computer system (Hopem) and ensure processing of lease clauses
  • Prepare invoices for operating costs related to leases
  • Prepare year-end audit files and manage relations with auditors
  • Ensure month-end and year-end management
  • Manage relations with financial institutions, including annual reviews
  • Work closely with members of the management team
  • Proactively prepare reports for management to identify fluctuations and critical aspects
  • Ensure that internal practices and controls comply with provincial and federal tax standards
  • Acquire relevant tax knowledge and become familiar with alternative investment vehicles and their appropriate accounting and tax implications
  • Monitor best accounting practices on the market to keep abreast of new trends
  • Design and propose improvements to accounting procedures and processes
  • Ensure governance practices are in place and respected
  • Perform all other related tasks

EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS and ATTRIBUTES

  • Minimum of 7 years' experience in accounting
  • Work experience and/or interest in the real estate sector would be an asset
  • Good knowledge of accounting systems, Hopem would be an asset
  • Ability and interest to work at both operational and strategic levels
  • Experience and knowledge of tax planning, accounting systems, budgets, internal controls and cash management
  • Familiarity with commercial lease management
  • Autonomous, multi-skilled, able to handle several projects simultaneously
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills
  • Excellent command of the Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, Power Point)
  • Excellent communication skills in French and English

EDUCATION

Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting or business management; must hold CPA designation. 

COMPENSATION
